Media & Technology in Education

I.                   Course Description and Knowledge Base

The study of Instructional Technology as a theory and practical process for aiding in the learning process. The course includes techniques and technology used in planning, selection, production, utilization, and evaluation of a variety of instructional materials and computer related technologies. Lecture 3 hours. Prerequisite: EDUC 3003

II.                Specific Learning Objectives:

1.              Explain how instructional technology impacts educational media and technology decisions. (Competency 1)

2.              Develop a consistent rationale for using media technologies in education or training, using systematic methods to select and evaluate appropriate media for instructional use with diverse learners. (Competency 3)

3.              Identify and describe the components of various communication models and their relationship to IT systems. (Competency 6)

4.              Identify, describe and apply components of the ASSURE Model and its relationship to instruction. (Competency 3)

5.              Develop instructional objectives that include descriptions of audience, behavior, learning condition and degree of acceptance. (Competency 7)

6.              Demonstrate knowledge of various instructional methods (tutorial, drill & practice, etc.) and their implementation in technology systems. (Competency 4)

7.              Develop basic skills in image scanning.

8.              Define distance education/learning and identify characteristics of distance education systems.

9.              Design and produce computer-generated slide shows, overhead transparencies and paper-based documents such as flyers or handouts.

10.          Demonstrate knowledge of copyright guidelines and how they apply to instructional situations. (Intellectual property rights both US and Worldwide). (Competency 13)

11.          Develop an understanding of the Oklahoma standards and how to use the criteria to design instructional technology strategies. (Competency 14, 15)

12.          Demonstrate Internet skills for communication, including building World Wide Web pages, listserv, email, synchronous/asynchronous communication, and Internet searches. (Competency 6)

13.          Explore and discuss software simulations, quests, games and instructional packages in terms of the empirical skills and competencies required of the PK-12 student.

14.          Recognize, describe and demonstrate computer use for instructional purposes, including basic parts and peripherals used in computer operation and software programs.

15.          Demonstrate a positive attitude toward instructional technologies by choosing to use them in your present & future activities.
